Old Unit, New War

The 10th Mountain Division is one of the best and among the most unique units in the U.S. Army. Formed in 1943, the 10th was the first unit to train to fight under the most difficult alpine conditions, and the post-war boom in recreational skiing was a direct result of its exploits.

But times have changed and so has the face of war. Today the 10th finds itself faced with a mission that entails more than being able to ski and shoot with a 120-pound pack on your back. John Kifner explains in this most interesting New York Times story.
